A personality disorder is a type of mental disorder in which you have a rigid and unhealthy pattern of thinking, functioning and behaving. A person with a personality disorder has trouble perceiving and relating to situations and people. This causes significant problems and limitations in relationships, social activities, work and school.
If you have a mood disorder, your general emotional state or mood is inconsistent with your situations and interferes with your ability to function. You may be extremely sad, empty or irritable, or you may have periods of depression alternating with being excessively happy.
A poor ability to manage emotional responses or to keep them within an acceptable range of typical emotional reactions. This can mean the inability to control sadness, anger, irritability, and frustration.
These feelings of anxiety and panic interfere with daily activities, are difficult to control, are out of proportion to the actual danger and can last a long time. You may avoid places or situations to prevent these feelings. Symptoms may start during childhood or the teen years and continue into adulthood.
Examples of anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), specific phobias and separation anxiety disorder. You can have more than one anxiety disorder. Sometimes anxiety results from a medical condition that needs treatment.
